A young red Cockapoo puppy enjoying being amongst the trees in a local forest

PLAYFUL – SMART – LOYAL

Recognized as the very first designer breed, the Cockapoo is a cross breed of the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel. Though, the exact origins of this charming little pup are unknown, their popularity took off during the 1960’s. Their sweet, fun loving temperament, partnered with a hypoallergenic coat make them one of the most sought after pets in the United States today.

TEMPERAMENT

If you’re looking for a devoted companion, look no further. These sweet dogs adore attention and being in the presence of their owner. They are sociable by nature and well with strangers and other dogs. Because of the attachment that they inherit, they do not like to be alone for long periods of time. If left alone too long it can lead to anxiety and destructive behavior. They are the perfect for a retired person or someone who works from home.

Training and Socialization

Intelligent, eager and ready to learn this breed makes training an easy process with the use of positive reinforcement and routine starting at an early age. Because they exude a sensitive side, they will not take well to scolding or negative enforcement. Any negative interaction can leave life lasting effects on their emotions and development. They want nothing more than to please their owner so patience is necessary. Regular socialization will help to calm some of the anxiety and shyness inherited by both parent breeds.

Appearance and Grooming

With a hypoallergenic coat you can rest assured that your home will not be covered in pet hair. Taking on the coat of the Poodle parent, the cockapoo can range from wavy to curly and come in a wide range of colors, both solid and pattern. These dogs have hair, not fur, and so regular trips to the groomer is required to keep their coats healthy and shiny.
